Allison Sheridan had always been schooled at home. But recently she made a big decision― she wanted to go to a public high school.
That meant facing a lot of new experiences - classmates, teachers, tests and especially homework.
"I didn't have homework when I was home-schooled," Allison said. "You just worked until you were finished with whatever you had to do on a certain day."
Allison, now a junior at Summit Preparatory Charter High School in Redwood City, California, was among the many students who get their education somewhere other than a traditional school setting.
When she was home-schooled, Allison studied English, history, math and French under the guidance of her mother.
But now she has a desire for a different social atmosphere as well as to prepare for college. "I wanted to experience school before college. It probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to be home-schooled through high school and then go to college all alone," Allison said.
Courtney Wallace, a sophomore (二年級學(xué)生) at Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif, was also home-schooled through eighth grade.
Besides taking art and science classes, as Allison did, Courtney practiced gymnastics at Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club, swam at Sunnyvale Swim Club, played the flute (長笛) in a band of home-schoolers and took ballet (芭蕾) classes at the Pacific Ballet Academy in Mountain View, California.
Like Allison, Courtney also decided to attend a public high school. "I had just always wanted to know what school was like," Courtney said, "so I decided to go to high school and find out."
High school has been mostly what she expected, Wallace said, although she did have to make adjustments. "I was a little afraid of taking tests and getting a lot of homework. I got used to taking tests, and I didn't get as much homework as I was afraid I would," Wallace said.
Wallace also said her high school experience has been fun because of the people she met. She said her friends did not find it unusual that she was home-schooled. Instead, "they just wanted to know what it was like."www.tesoon.com

Running like the wind, roaring like thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in south China.
This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World Nature Fund.
The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to southern China. In the 1950s, there were over 4,000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural habitat and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most endangered species.
Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they could not look after themselves.
"Breeding has damaged the quality of the species," said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.
To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers to South Africa. Four of them have already arrived.
Progress has been made as two elder tigers have recovered some of their instincts and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.
"South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in," said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and Development Centre. "We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete eco-chain (生物鏈) and there was a lack of space."
The tigers should return to China in 2007 when the reservations in Fujian are ready.
49. \What has made the South China tiger a most endangered species?
A. The loss of its natural instincts. B. The lack of a complete eco-chain.
C. Ever worsening water and air pollution. D. Deforestations and uncontrolled hunting.
50. How is the programme of sending tigers to South Africa getting on?
A. So far it is a complete waste of money and effort.
B. Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.
C. Some of the tigers are gradually recovering their natural skills.
D. The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely by 2007.
51. By saying "but they are nothing like their wild cousins", the writer means that _______.
A. they are no longer feared by other wild animals
B. they don't know how to get food by themselves
C. breeding has turned it into a different species
D. they look different from those tigers in the wild
52. The purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa is to _______?
A. help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild
B. provide them with healthier food and a better environment
C. get the tigers to have babies with their African cousins
D. show them to curious tourists from all over the world
53. Which of the following is NOT the reason for South Africa to be chosen as the training place?
A. African tigers are good at hunting wild animals by themselves.
B. South Africans are skilled at dealing with the tigers.
C. There is a complete eco-chain and enough space there.
D. The country has good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in.

IMMIGRATION is all about finding a new balance. While some people are pushed to quickly assimilate, others are pulled to maintain their own culture. How much you choose to assimilate can decide who you are, and how you are seen, in a new society.
Some immigrants reject the need to change. For example, my Dad always tries to compare New Zealand to China. He constantly tries to prove to us that China is better. Home is a "Chinese-only" zone. All our food is bought from the Chinese supermarket. My father never goes to the doctor but instead relies on traditional Chinese medicine.
However, some of my friends seem to be happy to have left their past behind. They dye their hair and stop speaking their mother tongue. They all eat, dress and behave just like Kiwis (^r 5? -tf.^). To me, their so-called "new life" is a betrayal (^^). ?
These extreme examples result from, the confusion that occurs when a person first settles in a new country.
When the older generation moved to a foreign country, they experienced a new culture overlapping their old one. They feared losing their own identity so much that they held tightly to their roots and never let go. In addition, faced with a new language, immigrants always find it easier to express ideas in their mother tongue. It's natural they should end up spending time with people who understand them the most ?people from their native country.
The younger generation don't have as much to lose as their parents and grandparents. Pressure from their age group forces them to change. If you want to make new friends, you have to speak their language. The longer you spend with your new friends, the less you follow the customs of your homeland. Young people quickly adapt to a new culture.
54. This passage is mainly about _______
A. immigrants' hard struggle for survival in a new country
B. two different attitudes towards a new culture among immigrants
C. the fierce competition between immigrants and the natives
D. immigrants' confusion about their identity and children
55. We can infer from the above passage that_______.
A. cultural shock is a common problem for most immigrants
B. immigrants are mostly disappointed in a new country
C. forgetting one's own culture is popular among immigrants
D. China is a better home place than most other countries
56. The underlined word "assimilate" in the first paragraph most probably means "_______" in this passage.
A. stick to one's own culture B. create a new culture
C. mix two cultures D. take up a new culture

IF you have read the fairytale about the Italian boy Pinocchio, you will remember that everyone knew when he lied because his nose grew. But did you know that your brain can also betray you when you tell a lie?
A study released last Monday showed that the brains of people who are lying look very different from those who are telling the truth. According to the US researchers, this finding could lead to creating a more accurate lie detector (測謊儀)。
"There may be separate areas in the brain involved in truth-telling and cheating that can be measured," said Scott Faro, head of the research group.
Faro and other scientists tested nine volunteers. Six of them were asked to shoot a toy gun and then lie and say they didn't do it. Three others who watched told the truth about what happened.
The volunteers were connected to a special machine, which used a strong magnet (磁鐵) to provide a real-time picture of brain activity. Clear differences were seen between the liars and the truth-tellers. A total of seven areas were active in the cheating group, but only four in the truth-telling team.
"It seemed to take more brain effort to tell the lie than to tell the truth," Faro 'said.
The traditional lie-detector machine looks at sweat, skin, breathing and heart rate changes.
Using such new technology as a lie detector would be expensive, but it might be worthwhile in some criminal cases.
57. You will most probably read this story in a ________.
A. advertisement B. fairy story C. magazine D. newspaper
58. In their research Faro and his fellow scientists found that ________.
A. cheating and truth-telling resulted in different brain activities
B. liars are born more active than truth tellers
C. liars and truth-tellers have totally different brain structures
D. telling a lie is much easier than telling the truth
59-Compared with the traditional one, the new lie-detector might be _______ according to the
passage.
A. less expensive B. easier to operate C. more reliable D. larger in size
60. It can be inferred from the story that _______.
A. the author is a member of the research group
B. science can turn a fairytale into reality
C. criminals will have a tougher time in the near future
D. the traditional lie-detectors are no longer in use now
