Interdependence
Early in the morning, deep in the forest, the trees were having a discussion.
“Animals come and rest in our shade (蔭) but they leave a mess behind,” said the Jamun. “The smell on some days is so bad!”
“They never think about us because we’re silent,” said the Sal. “But I’ve had enough! I’ve made up my mind to drive away any animal that comes here!”
“That may not be a good thing to do,” said the Peepul, the oldest and biggest tree there. “The animals cause trouble, I agree, but they serve a useful purpose. We are all interdependent-trees, animals, men…”
“I’m sorry,” said the Sal. “I must say your opinion is right but in this matter I will not listen to anyone. I won’t allow animals here any more!”
True to his word when a leopard came to rest in the shade later that day, the Sal began to move itself strongly from side to side. The leopard, terrified, jumped up and ran. The Sal drove away all the animals that came to that part of the forest that day and in the days that followed. In course of time animals stopped coming here.
The Sal became a great hero to the younger trees in the neighborhood and even some of the older ones began bowing (鞠躬) to him when the Peepul was not looking.
Then one day two woodcutters came to this part of the forest. “Men!” shouted the Sal. “Why have they come here? They’ve never come here before.”
“If they’ve never come here before it was because they were afraid of the animals,” said the Peepul. “Now the leopard and the tiger’s being away has made them brave.”
The Sal began to worry with good reason. It was the first tree the woodcutters cut down.

C. the Sal began to worry about him
D. the trees had grown big enough
52. The word “interdependent” most probably means “___________”.
A. trees, animals and men depend on each other
B. trees cannot grow taller if there are animals
C. animals shouldn’t make the forest dirty
D. men are good friends to all the trees
(C)
Do you live in a rural area or in an urban area? What do the words rural and urban mean? The context (語境) in which these two words are used may give you something that helps you find their meanings. But if the context does not tell you enough, what can you do? If you decide to use a dictionary, you are halfway to finding the meaning of a word. The problem is completely over when you find rural and urban in the dictionary and the definition, or meaning, of each that fits the context in which the word is used.
Words-each one called an entry word-are easy to find in the dictionary. You need only to remember that they are listed in alphabetical order (字母表的順序). Notice the guide words in the upper right-hand corner of the sample dictionary page. They are the first and last entry words on the page. Guide words help you find out whether the entry word you want is on that page.
Many words that have endings or suffixes are not listed as entry words. If you want to find the meaning of a word like anxiousness, you need to find the root word (詞根) anxious. The root word is the one to look up for words having endings or suffixes added to them.
All that is written about an entry word is known as the entry for that word. An entry includes the pronunciation of the entry word, one of more definitions, and sometimes one or more illustrative (作例證的) sentences or phrases. Some entries also appear with a picture that shows one of the definitions.
53. Sometimes we find the meaning of a word by ___________.
A. understanding the context

C. remembering its order in the list
D. finding the meaning in the same book
54. An entry word is a word that ___________.

D. needs a root and a suffixes to have some meanings
55. According to the passage, words with endings are ___________.
A. difficult to understand B. not explained in the dictionary
