When I was in seventh grade, I worked at a local hospital in my town. I volunteered about thirty to forty hours a week during the summer. Most of the time I spent there was with Mr. Gillespie. He never had any 33 , and nobody seemed to care about his condition. I spent many days there 34 his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he replied to me with only a very gentle moving of his fingers. Mr. Gillespie was still in a coma(昏迷).
I left for a week to vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Gillespie was 35 . I didn’t have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died. So with many questions unanswered, I continued to volunteer there through my eighth-grade year.
Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a 36 face. When I realized who it was, my eyes filled with 37 . He was alive! I asked him if his name was Mr. Gillespie, and if he had been in a coma about five years ago. With an 38 look on his face, he replied, “Yes”. I explained how I knew him, and that I had spent many hours talking with him in the hospital. With tears in his eyes, he gave me the warmest hug (擁抱)I had 39 received.
He began to tell me how, as he 40 there comatose, he could hear me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time. He thought it was an angle, not a person, who was there with him. Mr. Gillespie firmly believed that it was my voice and touch that had kept him 41 .
Then he told me about his 42 and what happened to him to put him in the coma. We both cried for a while and exchanged a hug, said our good-byes and went our separate ways.
Although I haven’t seen him since then, he 43 my heart with joy every day. I know that I made a difference between his life and his death. More important, he has made a great difference in 44 life. I will never forget him and what he did for me: he made me an angel.

Fish have ears. Really. They're quite small and have no opening to the outside world carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths(耳石).
As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths get a ring of calcium carbonate (碳酸鈣). By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can tell the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish's age, just like the growth rings of a tree.
Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new field. They're examining the chemical elements (元素) of each otolith ring.
The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which decides how much of these elements will get together within each otolith ring.
Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history.
The Atlantic croaker is a popular saltwater food fish. Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the traveling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles. Of course, this is important to managers in the fish industry because they know nearly nothing about the whereabouts (行蹤) of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears.
49. Why does the writer compare the fish to trees?
A. Trees get a growth ring each day. B. Trees also have otoliths.
C. Their growth rings are very small. D. They both have growth rings.
50. Why is it important to study the chemistry elements of otolith rings?
A. The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea.
B. Chemical elements of the otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim.
C. We can know more about fish and their living environment.
D. Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is.
51. How can you understand "fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears"?
A. They want to know where they can find fish ears.
B. They lend their fish to Thorrold for chemical studies.
C. They are very interested in Thorrold's research findings.
D. They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears.

Some Parisians have even started to go to work in
In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival cities, London and Paris, in “A Tale of Two Cities (雙城記).” These days, it might be A Tale of One City.
These days Parisians probably smile in sympathy at a visitor’s broken French and reply in polite English.
As it became harder to find jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs.
Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But
