B

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you've visited, or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it's likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen―the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is:Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no”.

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me".

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy.Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收費(fèi)站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon(優(yōu)惠券). But privacy does matter at least sometimes. It's like health. When you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it's gone do you wish you'd done more to protect it.

59. What does the author mean by saying “the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked” (Lines 3-4, Para. 2)?

   A. People’s personal information easily accessed without their knowledge.

Long after the 1998 World Cup was won, disappointed fans were still cursing the disputed refereeing (裁判) decisions that denied victory to their team. A researcher was appointed to study the performance of some top referees.

The researcher organized an experimental tournament (錦標(biāo)賽) involving four youth teams. Each match lasted an hour, divided into three periods of 20 minutes during which different referees were in charge.

Observers noted down the referees' errors. of which there were 61 over the tournament. Converted to a standard match of 90 minutes, each referee made almost 23 mistakes, a remarkably high number. The researcher then studied the videotapes to analyze the matches in detail. Surprisingly, he found that errors were more likely when the referees were close to the incident.

When the officials got it right, they were, on average, 17 meters away from the action. The average distance in the case of errors was 12 meters. The research shows the optimum (最佳的) distance is about 20 meters.

There also seemed to be an optimum speed. Correct decisions came when the referees were moving at a speed of about 2 meters per second. The average speed for errors was 4 meters per second.

If FIFA, football's international ruling body, wants to improve the standard of refereeing at the next World Cup, it should encourage referees to keep their eyes on the action from a distance, rather than rushing to keep up with the ball, the researcher argues.

He also says that FIFA's insistence that referees should retire at age 45 may be misguided. If keeping up with the action is not so important, their physical condition is less critical.

64. The experiment conducted by the researcher was meant to ________.

   B. analyze the causes of errors made by football referees

   C. set a standard for football refereeing

WASHINGTON―The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday denied California and 16 other states the right to set their own standards for carbon dioxide emissions (排放) from automobiles.

The E.P.A. administrator, Stephen L. Johnson, said the proposed California rules were preempted (搶在……之前行動) by federal authority and made moot (爭論未決的) by the energy bill signed into law by President Bush on Wednesday. Mr. Johnson said California had failed to make a compelling case that it needed authority to write its own standards for greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks to help control global warming.

The decision immediately provoked a heated debate over its scientific basis and whether political pressure was applied by the automobile industry to help it escape the proposed California regulations. Officials from the states and numerous environmental groups swore to sue (控告) to overturn the edict rules.

In an evening conference call with reporters, Mr. Johnson defended his agency's decision.

“The Bush administration is moving forward with a clear national solution, not a confusing patchwork of state rules,” he said. “I believe this is a better approach than if individual states were to act alone."

The 17 states―including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut―had waited two years for the Bush administration to issue a ruling on an application to set stricter air quality standards than those adopted by the federal government. The decision technically known as a Clean Air Act waiver, was the first time California was refused permission to carry out its own pollution rules; the federal government had previously granted the state more than 50 waivers(棄權(quán)聲明書).

The emissions standards California proposed in 2004―but never approved by the federal government―would have forced automakers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent in new cars and light trucks by 2020, with the cutbacks to begin in 1990 models.

試題詳情

China's third manned spacecraft Shenzhou VII was launched(1ifted off)from the Satellite Launch Center in Jiuquan at 9: 10 p.m. of September 25th, 2008. Afterwards, the spacecraft fulfilled its most ambitious and risky mission successfully: China's first-ever space walk. Three astronauts Zhai Zhigang. Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng made a great number of experiments during their space journey. Finally they landed in the grasslands of North China's Inner Mongolia.

The success of shenzhou VII has realized the great dream of Chinese astronauts’ walking in space in their own spacecraft. This breakthrough in China's human space flight is bound to make new contributions to the peaceful uses of outer space.
