A popular saying goes,“Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”However, that’s not really true.Words have the power to build us up or tear us down.It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves--the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

we all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it,though. But we really shouldn’t be,because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit。    ,

This“self-talk'’helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.Beware, though, that as much as 77%of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive,we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test,

or finally clean your room, join me in saying,“Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effects they will have;but we should be aware mat our words cause certain responses to others. For example, when returning an item to a store,we might use warm friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner.Or we can use harsh, critical language ,which will most likely cause the clerk、to be defensive.

Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking,we should always ask ourselves:Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then

it’s better left unsaid.

Words possess power:both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best.Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

66.The author argues in the first paragraph that

A.words have lasting effects on us

B.words will never hurt us at all

C.positive effects last longer than negative effects

D.negative words may let us down

67.Why should we not feel embarrassed when talking to ourselves?

A.Almost everybody has the habit of talking to oneself.

B.Talking to ourselves is believed to be good for our health.

C.Talking to ourselves helps us to solve all the problems.

D.It does harm to have“self-tall”when we are alone.

68.The underlined phrase“give ourselves a pat on the back'’in Paragraph 3 means

    A.blame ourselves                                 B.punish ourselves

    C.praise ourselves                                     D.talk to ourselves

69.Which of the following statements would the author agree to?

A.Unkind words are more likely to be forgotten.

B.It is better to think twice before talking to others.

C.Words always possess long positive effects.

D.Kind words are sometimes not needed at al

70.Why should we talk in a friendly way when returning an item to a store?

A.Because kind words build up complex relationships.

B.Because the clerk in a store is hard to deal with.

C.Because friendly words cause positive responses.

D.Because critical language may hurt your feelings

As you read this, nearly 80,000 Americans are waiting for a new heart, kidney or some other Organ that can save their life.Tragically about 6,000 of them will die this year―nearly twice as many people’as died in the Sept.11 attacks―because they won’t get their transplant in time. 86%of Americans say they support organ donation, but only 20%actually sign up to do it.

Part of the problem is the way we handle organ donation.Americans who want to make this sort of gift have to opt in(加入)--that is,indicate on a driver’s license that when they die, they want their organs to be made available. Many European and Asian countries take the opposite approach. In Singapore, for example, all residents receive a letter when they come of age informing them that their organs may be donated unless they object. In Belgium, which adopted a similar presumed-consent system 12 years ago, less than 2%of the population has decided to out

Further complicating the situation in the U.S.is the fact that whatever decision you make can be overruled by your family. The final say is left to your surviving relatives, who must make up their minds in a few hours after brain death has been declared. There are as many as 50 body parts that can save or transform the life of some others, but for many families lost in grief, the idea of operating on a loved one is more than they can bear. The U.S,like all medically advanced  societies, has struggled to feud a way to balance an individual’s right over his body with society’s need to save others from death.Tommy Thompson,Health Secretary, last spring announced plans to encourage donations.Perhaps it is time that the government considered improving the system.

Certainly dustmen prefer to be known as“Refuse Collection and Disposal Officers”.You may think that this is rather silly, and that it is better to call a spade. But dustmen can be just as sensitive as people of any other occupations, though we must admit that their job is not the most romantic one in the world. We often take dustmen for granted.Perhaps because they usually come very early in the morning, before most people are up,we are inclined to forget that they exist. Our dustbins are emptied。regularly, but we rarely stop to think about the men who do this. However, it is one of the most important jobs in the world, and when there are no dustmen        ,the general public soon becomes aware that something is wrong.

Recently, the dustmen of England went on strike for higher wages.During the first few days it was regarded as a joke. For some reason, jokes have always been made about dustmen ,and some people thought this strike was very amusing. But when the first two weeks had passed, and the dustbins were overflowing in nearly every backyard in the country, the joke did not seem so funny any more.As the strike continued, people could not bear the accumulation of rubbish around their dustbins, and they looked for other places in which to get rid of it.Even when the strike was over, and the wages dispute had been settled,it took several weeks for the country to get cleaned up completely ,as so much rubbish had accumulated.Perhaps now the English people appreciate the work of their dustmen rather more highly, and won't take them for granted any more.    76.What is the purpose of the passage?(Please answer within 10 words.)

James, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers (克里夫蘭騎士隊(duì)),

was among the first to start studying Chinese. He began in April last

At the same time, the Russian Olympic Committee has given its athletes Chinese textbooks.

The books will help them learn some conversational (會(huì)話(huà)的) Chinese.

Learning Chinese may help athletes of the likes of Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker and Katie

Hoff enjoy their stay in Beijing.

They visited Beijing last April and experienced the language barrier(障礙). "We had such a great time exploring the city. However, it was just so hard to understand even the simplest words," said Hoff.

They are learning with a computer-based language program. "It's tough," said Phelps. "But I feel it's important to try to speak the language of a host country. Hopefully we can all put our skills in Mandarin into practice in Beijing this summer."

                  Passage 2

                  There is no free lunch

Nearly all Chinese people are taught to be honest from childhood. But 25-year-old Xu Ting could never have known that dishonesty would almost destroy his life.

In April 2006, Xu took 1,000 yuan from an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM, 自動(dòng)取款機(jī)). He found that the machine had only taken 1 yuan from his account(帳戶(hù)). Xu was excited. Over the next eight hours, he kept taking money out of the machine. He got 175,000 yuan from the faulty machine.

"I thought it was OK to take the money. I didn't steal it or rob the bank," said Xu. But the young man was wrong. After a year on the run, the police caught him. Last November Guangzhou court (法庭) gave him a life sentence(終身監(jiān)禁).

Xu's story is a hot topic around the country. Many people thought the punishment (懲罰) was too heavy. They say that many people in the same situation would do as he did. Others say he knew the machine was faulty and was in fact stealing money with his bankcard.

Last month Xu had a retrial (重審). The court shortened Xu's sentence to five years and said he must give back all the money.

"Xu's story teaches us that we should be honest. A problem with the machine is not an excuse to do wrong. Suppose your neighbor's door has a broken lock. That is not an excuse for breaking into the house," said news reporter Liu Min.

We wanted to study how students at our school spend money. In order to study this, we made some questions to ask our classmates. First, we asked our classmates how much money they spent in one month. Then we asked how much money they spent for things like drinks, music, books, movies, computer games, and other things. Our math teacher helped us make a graph(圖表) of our classmates’ answers.

Then we thought it would be interesting to compare these answers with our classmates’ expenses from last year. We used their answers to make another graph for their expenses last year.

Looking at the two graphs, it is easy to compare the expenses for the two years. Some of their expenses(花費(fèi))increased, but others decreased. This was a very interesting project for us.

                  閱讀短文,簡(jiǎn)要回答下列問(wèn)題。

                  Young voice is heard

He is an ordinary Chinese young man. He loves shopping and is a fan of basketball and

Jay Chou. But his love for the country has moved millions of Chinese around the world.

Nathan, 20, is a Chinese student at a Canadian university. This month his video, titled Tibet Was, Is and Always Will Be a Part of China, became a hit on Youtube, with more than 1.6 million hits within eight days. Youtube is a popular video-sharing website.

Nathan made the video after he learned about the unrest (騷亂) in Lhasa on March 14,

the capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region, from Canadian TV news. Eighteen citizens and

one police officer were killed during the unrest, with shops robbed and houses and cars burned.

"I was very angry when most of the TV stations in Canada said China 'invaded'(入侵)Tibet and Tibetans want 'freedom'. That was ridiculous(荒謬的). They didn't know anything about Chinese history," said Nathan. In his seven-minute video, Nathan lists historical facts to prove(證明)that Tibet has long been a part of China and can't be separated(分離). "I want Chinese people's voice to be heard," said the boy.

Growing up in Xi'an, an ancient capital of China, Nathan became interested in history and military(軍事)when he was little. He still remembers how angry he was when he watched the movie, War of Opium, at the age of eight. So the little boy began to read the histories of the Ming and Qing dynasties (朝代) at the fifth grade and is quite good at that part now.

When Nathan moved to Canada with his parents five years ago, there were only European history classes in school. The boy turned to the Internet and downloaded Chinese E-books. Sometimes he found that people around him knew little about China. "I will tell them to read books, or watch my videos." He has made five videos about Chinese cities and army.

"I have already got used to the lifestyle in Canada. But I never forget that I am a Chinese," said Nathan.

                  Profile(簡(jiǎn)介)of Tibet

Population: 2.7 million. 93 percent are ethnic Tibetans(藏族人). There are more than 5 million ethnic Tibetans in China. Most of them live in Tibet, Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan.

Language: Both Tibetan and Chinese languages are taught in Tibetan schools.

History: Tibet was a slave(奴隸)society fifty years ago. After it was liberated in 1956, Chinese government spent a lot of money helping the Tibetans build houses and roads and get free education.

Chinese often make assumptions (假設(shè)) about Westerners and their culture. They eat half-cooked beef. They drink coffee or cola but do not drink tea. They kiss each other on the cheeks to greet each other. Let's hear what Westerners think about Chinese culture.

“The Great Wall is part symbol, part myth (神秘). It's a symbol of how much humans can achieve. (103) Many people believe it is possible to see it in space - but this is not true.”  said Daniel O'Brien, who was 24 from the UK.

                  (104) We're still waiting for an authoritative (權(quán)威的) answer to the question. Whatever, the Wall is without doubt the world's longest man-made structure (建筑物). It goes 6,400 kilometers around North China. The earliest parts of it were built around 220 BC. Work on it went on until the Ming Dynasty (朝代) (1368-1644). The Wall is one of the world's seven wonders. The words "Great Wall" have entered the English language. There is a saying, (105) "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."
