Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension
Help your child keep what he reads—a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to gain important information from textbooks.
Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads.  71
Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren’t too hard.  72  Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
73  To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly—a skill known as fluency. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly so he'll become more fluent.
Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling hard with comprehension, he may need more help with his reading—for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.
Supplement class reading. If his class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will make his way through tougher classroom texts.
Talk about what he's reading. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book.  74 For example:
Before: “What interests you in this book? What doesn't?”
●During: “  75 Is it turning out the way you thought it would? ”
●After: “Can you summarize the book? What did you like about it?”

A.Reread to build fluency.
B.What's going on in the book?
C.Look up new words in the dictionary.
D.Do you know all the characters in the story?
E. Ask questions before, during, and after a reading session.
F. Plus, he's not only seeing the words, he's hearing them, too.
G. He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help.

Sustainable development is applied to just about everything from energy to clean water and economic growth, and as a result it has become difficult to question either the basic assumptions behind it or the way the concept is put to use. This is especially true in agriculture, where sustainable development is often taken as the sole measure of progress without a proper appreciation of historical and cultural perspectives.

To start with, it is important to remember that the nature of agriculture has changed markedly throughout history, and will continue to do so .Medieval agriculture in northern Europe fed, clothed and sheltered a predominantly rural society with a much lower population density than it is today. It had minimal effect on biodiversity, and any pollution it brought about was typically localized. In terms of energy use and the nutrients captured in the product it was relatively inefficient.

Contrast this with farming since the start of the industrial revolution.Competition from overseas led farmers to specialize and increase yields.Throughout this period food became cheaper, safe and more reliable. However, these changes have also led to habitat loss and to diminishing biodiversity.

What’s more, demand for animal products in developing countries is growing so fast that meeting it will require an extra 300 million tons of grain a year by 2050,yet the growth of cities and industry is reducing the amount of water available for agriculture in many regions.

All this means that agriculture in the 21st century will have to be very different from how it was in the 20th.This will require radical(激進的)thinking. For example, we need to move away from the idea that traditional practices are inevitably more sustainable than new ones.We also need to abandon the notion that agriculture can be “zero impact”.The key will be to abandon the rather simple and static measures of sustainability, which centre on the need to maintain production without increasing damage.Instead we need a more dynamic interpretation, one that looks at the pros and cons of all the various way land is used. There are many different ways to measure agricultural performance besides food yield: energy use, environmental costs, water purity, carbon footprint and biodiversity. It is clear, for example, that the carbon of transporting tomatoes from Spain to the UK is less than that of producing them in the UK with additional heating and lighting, but we do not know whether lower carbon footprints will always be better for biodiversity.

What is crucial is recognizing that sustainable agriculture is not just about sustainable food production.

72.How do people often measure progress in agriculture?

A.By its productivity                 B. By its impact on the environment

C.By its sustainability                D.By its contribution to economic growth

73.What does the author think of traditional farming practices?

A.They have remained the same over the centuries

B.They have not kept pace with population growth

  C.They are not necessarily sustainable

  D.They are environmentally friendly

74.What will agriculture be like in the 21st century?

A.It will go through radical changes

B.It will supply more animal products

C.It will abandon traditional farming practices

D.It will cause zero damage to the environment

75.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A.To remind people of the need of sustainable development

B.To suggest ways of ensuring sustainable food production

C.To advance new criteria for measuring farming progress

D.To urge people to rethink what sustainable agriculture is.

Traffic Safety Tips

If you are among those who think that traffic safety tips are something that need to be given to children and not adults, you are so very young. Being an adult, it is our responsibility to set a good example for others. Remember when you are driving a car with your teenaged son or daughter sitting next to you, he or she is watching you and observing how you drive. So make sure that you follow all the necessary traffic rules to set a good example. Some of the effective traffic safety tips are mentioned below.

Put Your Seat Belt On

The first thing that you are supposed to do, and make sure that others in the car also do, is to put your seat belt on. In case there is a child in the car between the age of 4 and 8, a booster seat(兒童座椅)should be used as safety belts are not meant for small children and cannot protect them in case of accidents. Kids under the age of 12 should never sit on the front seat.

70._________________

Do you drive, listen to music, eat your sandwich and speak on the phone all at the same time? If you do this, you are not displaying your super powers but allowing multiple things to distract you. Once you are driving, be it alone or with your friends and family, you are responsible for everyone present in the car. So stop doing other things and focus on driving safe.

71._________________

Teenagers and young adults especially, don’t realize the risks they are putting themselves into. Alcohol influences your mood and mind and may not give you the judgment and control that you need to have when driving safe. Even smoking should be avoided and drugs should not be consumed if you are planning to drive.

72._________________

Driving under pressure with your mind occupied with issues at work or at home would easily allow you to distract your mind off the road leading to an accident. So make sure that you don’t let the things outside your car affect you when you are in the car. Sleep properly and stay relaxed before hitting the road.

73._________________

Your emotions or impatience may make you break the signal at times. Or break the speed limit because you are getting late. Don’t do that! The consequences for that may actually be enough to separate you from your driver’s license on a permanent basis. Make sure you obey the traffic rules and guidelines and do all to be a responsible citizen.

74._________________

Last but not the least, keep your car in good condition. Make sure you are giving your car for servicing and maintenance on time. Make sure you always check your vehicle tires before hitting the road and don’t run out of gas!

So these were some of the main traffic safety tips that should be followed by one and all in order to stay safe and be an example for others. Remember, rules and regulations are made for your own benefit and safety. So make sure that you obey them. Take care and have a safe ride.
