5% of deaths caused by road accidents occur in the first few minutes after a crash. Up to 85% of these deaths could be prevented if first aid was given.

The first person on the scene of an accident will almost certainly be another road user. So as a driver your knowledge of first aid could make a real difference to someone in the event of a road accident.

Make safe: Make sure you stay safe: ①keep off the road. If you need to stop coming cars, signal to them from the pavement(人行道). Wear fluorescent reflective(熒光反射) clothing, flashing lights, etc. Don’t smoke!

*If you are in a car and you come across an accident, first park safely and turn off the engine before you get out to help.

Call for help: Dial 999 (or ②112) for the emergency services. If there is no phone nearby, ask help and send two people ③in opposite directions. Remain calm.

Do not allow smoking or offer food or drink to casualties(傷亡人員) as this could hamper(妨礙) medical treatment.

Calling 999 (112): Do this as soon as you can or get someone else to do it. You will need to tell the emergency services:

·where you are

·what has happened (describe the accident)

·how many people are injured(受傷)

·whether they are breathing(呼吸) or bleeding(流血).

Then you will know what to do while you wait for an ambulance to arrive.

He was just an ordinary postman. Day after day, he shuttled(穿梭) back and forth across the village. For him, life
was without waves.

One day, he was delivering mail as usual. When he looked up in the sky, he suddenly lost his balance. It was a little stone that tripped him up(絆倒). He observed the stone that had embarrassed(難堪) him, finding it strange but beautiful. In his eyes, this stone was like a lost jewel(寶石) covered with dust. The postman then placed the stone in his bag carefully. Because of this stone’s arrival, his day was lightened. He suddenly had a bold thought—I can build a castle with such beautiful stones. After 20 years of working day and night, the postman’s dream castle was finally completed. It was a magnificent castle just as he had imagined. It was a miracle arising from the ordinary.
This is a real story. The postman’s name is Xue Waller. The stone castle has become a famous tourist attraction in France, which is called“ ideal palace of Ferdinand Cheval.”At the entrance of the stone castle, there is a sentence—“I want to know how far a dream stone can go.”
