People who enjoy a dream-filled sleep are better at recalling information and making links between facts when waking. But recharging with a shallow (小睡) offers no such mental improvement, the research suggests. The results of the study added to the growing body of evidence that Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is very important to the brain’s ability to form strong memories.
An average night's rest includes four or five spells of REM sleep, but these bursts tend to be lengthier towards the end of the night. This means adults getting less than the recommended seven to eight hours a night -- and therefore inadequate REM sleep -- may be damaging their mind's ability to memorize: Although REM sleep is not classified as a type of deep sleep, it is only reached after the brain has passed through deep sleep stages.
In the recent study, participants were shown groups of three words and asked to find another word that can be associated with all three words. They were tested once in the morning and then given the same task again in the afternoon. In between, some were allowed a nap with REM sleep, some a nap without REM sleep, while the others had a quiet rest period. The quiet rest and non-REM sleep groups didn't improve, but the REM sleep group improved on their morning performance by an average of almost 40 per cent. Dr Sara Mednick, a sleep researcher at the University of California who led the study, believes the formation of connections between previously unassociated information in the brain occurs during REM sleep.
It is believed that sleep acts as a sort of mental filing system, enabling the brain to sort relevant information from useless information. This process may take place as memories are removed hem one art of the brain to others.

讀寫任務(wù)
閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
No wonder English poses(構(gòu)成)such a challenge to non-native speakers. This most global of languages has more words than any other, over 1 million according to the Global Language Monitor.Out of this number, the average American college student has mastered between 8,000-15,000.
Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up.They make out long lists of words-often in alphabetical order-and simply memorize their definitions(釋義)and Chinese meanings.
The bad news is that definition memorization does them little good when it comes to college entrance tests like the SATs.For these tests, a student needs to understand, not simply parrot words studied.
The good news is that there are better ways to build an academic English vocabulary.
Vocabulary learning system
The first thing to do is to develop an organized, but easy means of collecting and learning new words. We recommend a card system that includes the following information:
Word-Simple Definition in English-Phrase or Sentence-Related Words-Synonyms(同義詞)and Antonyms(反義詞)-with a Chinese translation on the reverse(背面)of the card.
The advantage of this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word but a group of related words.
Keep your cards on a detachable(可分離的)metal ring, so you can carry them around and add to your collection daily.

People unhappy with the rich: Poll
There is growing dissatisfaction toward rich people, according to a new online poll.
The poll by the China Youth Daily in collaboration(與…合作) with Sina.com has highlighted the apparent discontent (不滿)over the country's widening income gap.
Nearly 8,000 people filled in online questionnaires last week, and when asked to use three words to describe society's rich, the top responses were "extravagant"(奢侈的), "greedy" and "corrupt".
About 57 percent of those polled said that "extravagant" was the best word to describe the rich, followed closely by "greedy".
Ironically, despite their dissatisfaction, 93 percent of those polled wished they could be rich too, and that richer people should be "socially responsible".
Some 33 percent of respondents also praised rich people for being "smart".
Nearly 90 percent of respondents agreed that most people in society, including themselves, were willing to speak up for the poor but were reluctant to take action and actually do something for them.
The survey comes on the heels of a heated debate over comments made by renowned economist Mao Yushi, who said he was "speaking for the rich and working for the poor".
A report released by the Asian Development Bank last Wednesday revealed that China's Gini coefficient - an indicator of the wealth divide - rose from 0.407 in 1993 to 0.473 in 2004.
An earlier CASS report said that the richest 10 percent of Chinese families now own more than 40 percent of all private assets, while the poorest 10 percent share less than 2 percent of the total wealth.
The country's income disparity(懸殊) is close to that of Latin America, the report which came out in January said.
