Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to
read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills
that I think are especially good.
Preview-if it’s long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading
like long magazine articles and business reports.
     Here’s how to preview.
     ● Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
     ● Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn’t give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don’t really
want-or need-to read.
Skim-if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading.
-like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
     Here’s how to skim.
    ● Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
    ● Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same
piece, but we’ll get a similar idea of what it’s all about.

讀寫任務(wù)
         閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
"Depend on yourself" is what nature says to everyone. Parents can help you. Teachers can help you.
Others still can help you. But all these only help you to help yourself.
There have been great men in history. But many of them were very poor in childhoods and no uncles,
aunts or friends to help them. Schools were few and not very good. They could not depend upon them
for an education. They saw how it was, and set to work with all their strength to know something. They
worked their own way up to fame.
One of the most famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils. "I can not make worthy men of you but I can help you make men of yourself. "
But some young men tend to totally depend on others to help them out. They can never achieve much
unless they see their weak points and change their course. They are nothing now, and will be nothing as
long as they live, unless they accept the advice of their parents and teachers and depend on their own
honest efforts.
【寫作內(nèi)容】

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

As a teenager of the digital era(數(shù)字時代), it is really hard to say no to fantastic electronic gadgets (電子產(chǎn)品). Many of us can’t get through a day without using our mobile phones , checking our e-mails or talking on the Internet. No matter if we’re “@ home”, “@ school” or “@ play”, living without technological toys seems more and more unthinkable.

However, although gadgets bring convenience, many of us can start to feel stressed out by them. And a lot of electronics are fairly expensive. Fashionable gadgets come and go in the digital age in the blink (眨眼) of any eye. So, think twice before you pulling out your wallet.

Here is one of the most popular gadgets and it’s pros and cons (利弊):

Pros: Laptops have made our lives much easier. You can take your books, movies, music and homework everywhere.

閱讀下面的短文(感謝他人),然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

[閱讀材料]

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款臺), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car stopped behind me.It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's.We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me.Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership-a shop selling cars-was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks.I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

“Thank you”-two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.
