Many children love to play with snow in winter. But Long Chuan has come to hate it.

This year his hometown suffered from snowstorms(遭受暴風(fēng)雪)for nearly a month. The heavy snow stopped cars and trains, broke the electricity(電)tower and turned tap water to ice.

Every day Long Chuan had to walk several kilometers to carry drinking water.“I couldn't ride a bike and it took me 3 hours to walk to school.I can't remember how many times I slipped(滑倒)on the hard ice,”said Long Chuan.

Long is not alone. This year millions of people in central and southern China had a freezing winter without enough water and electricity. The biggest snowstorms in 50 years killed more than 100 people. They also cost the country 111.1 billion yuan.

Experts(專家)say a special type of climate condition(氣候條件), La Nina, caused the storms.During a La Nina, the water in the Pacific Ocean(太平洋)near the equator(赤道)becomes colder than usual. It changes the weather around the world.

Besides China, Canada, the US and Middle Eastern countries also met with heavy snowstorms this winter. The special climate caused the recent flooding(洪水)in Australia, too.

However, experts say that people have destroyed the environment(環(huán)境).Global warming(全球變暖)may be causing these terrible weather events to happen more and more often.

Xing usually gets up at about seven and needs 20 minutes to get to school. But on sandstorm day, he needs 40 minutes. When the sky is dark with sand, buses and cars all move much more slowly.Sometimes, people can't even see for 200 metres.

Different from popular thoughts, colds are not caused by bad weather. Colds are caused by viruses(病毒) in the body, and you are better out on the snowy day than you are in a warm room, with your friends, who just may be passing the virus around. If you feel a chill(寒戰(zhàn)) when you are coming down with a cold, you are already sick. A chill is an early sign of the cold.

The virus can spread through air when a cold-sufferer(感冒患者) coughs or sneezes(打噴嚏). Surprisingly, this is not the most usual way of spreading. Many studies have now show that most colds are “caught” by hands. A cold-sufferer rubs her nose, so spreading the virus to her hand. Then a friend comes to visit her. They shake(握) their hands. The friend then gets something to eat by hand, and several days later she catches a cold. Although some parents pick up their children's tissues(紙巾) and carefully throw them away, they fail to wash their hands. They'll catch the colds, too.

Cold viruses can also be spread by objects, for example, telephones, plates. The cold-sufferer as well as other members of the house, by washing their hands often, will stop the viruses from spreading in a way.
