They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears.C LONDON ― A morning’s train rides away, across the Channel, English kids talk about Liverpool’s soccer team in a Paris pub. Some Parisians have even started to go to work in London. In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival cities, London and Paris, in “A Tale of Two Cities . These days, it might be A Tale of One City. These days Parisians probably smile in sympathy at a visitor’s broken French and reply in polite English. As it became harder to find jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs. Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down. “For me, the difference is that London is real, alive, said Trevor Wheeler, a banker. Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees. “I am French, but I’ll stay in London, she said. There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. “I think people laugh more in Paris, she said. In fact, London and Paris, with their obvious new similarities, are beyond the old descriptions. As the European Union gave them more and more freedom, Londoners flocked into Paris to shop, eat and buy houses. “Both cities have changed beyond recognition. said Larry Collins, a writer and sometimes a Londoner. Like most people who know both well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably. “I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s, and it is still a wonderful place, Collins said. “But if I had to choose, it would be London. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better. But certainly not cheaper. In fancy parts of London, the fee paid for an accommodation can be twice that on Avenue Foch in Paris. Deciding between London and Paris asks for a lifestyle choice. Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don’t have to choose. “I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is so structured, she said. “In London, you can be who you want. No one cares. 查看更多

When you are reading something in English, you may often meet with a new word. What’s the best way to know it?

You may look it up in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you a lot about the word: the pronunciation, the Chinese meaning and how to use the word. But how can you know where the word is thousands of English words? How to find it in the dictionary both quickly and correctly?

First, all the English words are arranged(安排) in the letter order. In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with letter A, then B, C, D…. That means, if there are two words “desert” and “pull”, “desert” will be certainly before “pull”. Then if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth… For example, “pardon” is before “plough”, “judge” before “just”, etc.

Do you understand how to look up in the dictionary?

The dictionary will be your good friend. I hope you’ll use it as often as possible in your English study.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people.
Why do we go wrong about our friends? Sometimes people hide their real meanings when they say something. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” That’s being friendly. But “l(fā)ucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy(嫉妒) in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see _it_ himself. But “l(fā)ucky dog” puts you down a little. He may mean you don’t deserve your luck.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Do his words agree with the tone(語調(diào)) of voice? His posture(姿態(tài))? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. If you spend the minute thinking about the real meaning behind one’s words, it may save another mistake.
