Our class had a weekly class meeting this week. We talked about how to deal with lies, hoaxes(騙局) or rumors (謠言) . Here are the stories some students told. ﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡ Zhang Wei: Yesterday my friend Jim went to school without his homework. He told the teacher that his dog ate it. It was just an excuse he made to cover the fact that he didn’t do his homework. The teacher knew about that and made Jim stay to finish his homework after school. Sometimes we think we can avoid trouble by making excuses when we do something wrong, but we’re really making the bigger. ﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡ Chen Ping: Last week I got a message. It said,” A little girl called Julia has brain cancer. The girl will get three cents from American Online each time this message is forwarded(轉(zhuǎn)發(fā)). So please be kind and forward this to everyone you know. If not, you will have bad luck for a year.” In fact, it is just one of the silly chain letters(連鎖信)to cheat you and waste your time. ﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡ Xu Yan: A big earthquake (地震) hit Ya’an, Sichuan on April 20th. The earthquake was strongly felt by people in Chengdu. A rumor said Chengdu would be hit by a bigger earthquake in the coming days. For the next several days, thousands of people camped outside their houses at night because of fear. Besides, many people rushed to buy food, water, medicine and so on. Some businessmen used people’s fear of earthquake to help sell their goods (商品) at a higher price. Of course, nothing happened in the end. |

We are told breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and dinner the most enjoyable. But what about lunch? In today’s fast-paced society, not many people take time to enjoy this midday meal. We just take a quick salad, or buy a sandwich and eat at our computers. Sometimes, if there is a deadline around the corner, we just give up lunch. The development of technology hasn’t done our eating habits much good, either. We are constantly distracted(分神) by e-mails, social media, 24-hour news, and hand-held electronic devices.
Long working hours can cause all kinds of health problems. Employers should encourage workers to take time off for lunch. This is because long lunch breaks can benefit both people and society. To take a lunch break is to slow down and gain some views. A break from work allows us to think cleverly and outside the box. It also puts our daily tasks into a wider context(環(huán)境).
What we eat at lunch is also important. A fast-food lunch is more harmful than not having lunch at all. And it’s not just about calories and unhealthy food. Recent studies show that fast food also has negative effects on how we think. However, if we sit down at a proper restaurant and chat leisurely with colleagues, we are more likely to slow down and talk about something that hardly can be achieved in a noisy and crowded fast food chain.

What do you think is the most common illness? Do you get ill sometimes? We are lucky to live now, because there are lots of medicines to make people better.
The most common illness in the world is the cold. It often begins with a sore throat. Then you sneeze and your nose runs. You usually have a headache too. Often you cough later. It’s not a very bad illness, but you can feel quite ill.
There isn’t a cure (治愈) for a cold, but you can take medicines to make you feel better. For instance, aspirin (阿斯匹林) can stop your headache. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water too. A doctor once said to me, “With the proper medicine, a cold will continue for seven days. With no medicine, it will continue for a whole week!”
Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people knew that some plants made them feel better. They ate the leaves, the roots, the fruit, or the seeds of plants. For instance, the juice of lemons makes a sore throat feel better.
In modern times, scientists have looked at these plants, and found out which chemicals (化學(xué)物質(zhì)) are in them. Many of our medicines today are made from those chemicals.
There are some illnesses which we can’t cure yet. And nobody has found a cure for old age. But because of modern medicines, most people now live longer than their grandparents.
