good know cover always pass kind difficult high explain fail

Do you still remember the scores in your past exams? Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 55 I got when I was in high school.

The test was the final for a course. I remembered waiting anxiously (焦慮地) as my teacher Mr. Right passed out our papers one by one. It was a rather 1.___________ test. I heard my classmates groaning (嘆息), and I could tell by the groans that the scores weren’t looking good.

Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There in big red numbers, was my score, 55! I lowered my head, and 2.___________ the score up quickly. A 55 is not something that you wanted your classmates to see. “The scores were not very good, none of you 3.____________,” Mr. Right said. “The4.____________ score in the class was a 55.”

A 55? That’s me! I didn’t feel so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot 5.____________.

I walked home alone that day with the low but high score. My mother6.___________ that I had a big test that day and asked me as soon as I got home, “How did you do in your test?” “I made a 55,” I said. A frown (皺眉) now stood on my mother’s face. I knew I had to 7.___________ at once. “But Mum, I had the highest score in the class,” I proudly said. I thought that explanation would make a difference. “You 8.___________!” my mother replied. “But it’s the highest!” I insisted (堅(jiān)持). “I don’t care what scores others had, but you failed. What matters is what you do!” my mother firmly said.

For years, my mother was 9.__________ in that way. It didn’t matter what others did, it only mattered what I did and that I did it excellently.

We often don’t understand the 10.___________ of good parents until we ourselves stand in the parents’ shoes. My mother’s words have helped me throughout life.

Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.

Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn’t remember where she’d put them.

Perhaps you’ve had such experiences like these. Most people have. But most of them haven’t realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory can be improved. If you’ll just accept that, the following will show you how.

First, relax. If you are over worried about remembering something, you’ll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t follow up with sayings like “Oh, my God! I always forget things!” Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory.

But relaxing isn’t enough. To improve your memory, you’ll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look for opportunities to exercise your memory. For example, if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words.

If you don’t take notice of things actively, you won’t remember them. So, you can make pictures of what you see in your mind every day. For example, don’t just put your keys down! If you want to find them again, make a mind picture of the place where you’re putting them.
