Goog morning, Ladies and gentleman. My topic is “________”.
Now in the 21st century, advertising is more and more important for people. Why? I think it is because through advertising, people, especially the businessmen, can introduce their products to the people all over the world. Because of this, many companies spend a lot of money on advertising. As we all know, there are many advertisements which are very interesting and popular. For example, Michael Jordan made an interesting advertisement for Nike. From this you can see how the companies make their products known to the world.
People can make a lot of money through advertising. It is known that many famous singers and movie stars make money in this way. However, I don’t think this is a good way for them to make money, because they are not the professional advertisers, especially those who advertise in medicine advertisements.
Nowadays, advertising not only means making the products known, but also means make ourselves known to people around us. Living today, we have to make people believe in us if we want to do important jobs. But how can this be done? We should first let other people know our good side: the good habits and abilities we have. In short, we should always remember to advertise ourselves to others. It’s possible to do many simple tricks with numbers. Here is one trick, if you follow the instructions, you will find it’s really interesting.
First, write down your house number. For example, if your address is 73 Jin Shang Road, you would write down 73. After you write down your house address number, you double it. Then add 5 to this doubled number. For example, if your address is 73 and you double it, you will get 146. Then you add 5, you will get 151.
And then, multiply this number by 50. In our example here, you’ll get 7550. The next step is to add your age to this total. For example, if you’re 16 years old, you should add 16 to this total. In our example here, the result will be 7566.
After that, you have to add the number of days in a year, which is 365. In our example here, 365 added to 7566 is 7931.
The final step is this: Subtract 615 from the number that you have. Take away 615 from the total. In our example, 7931 minus 615 is 7316.
The result here—7316—is the trick. The first part of the number is the address and the last part of the number is the age of the person. That is, 73 is the address that we started with, and 16 is the age that we used.
Isn’t it interesting? Do you want to have a try now?

A 14-year-old British student is packing for the next day of school: textbooks, notebooks, pens, 250 grams of flour, an egg and some cooking oil. Wait, what?
It’s not a joke.
From September, cookery will be a compulsory (必修的) course for kids aged 7-14 in the UK.
Primary school students will learn how to put things together and make simple, healthy food.
At high school, students will then master a number of different meals. They will also learn some cooking skills including baking.
Britain is sometimes known as a country with bad food and unhealthy eating habits. These new courses are part of the country’s effort to bring healthy food back onto the table.
“One in four British families no longer has a table that everyone can eat around. One out of every two meals we eat is eaten alone. Only four out of ten of us enjoy eating meals with our children,” British writer Joanna Blythman wrote in her book Bad Food Britain: How A Nation Ruined Its Appetite (食欲) in 2006.
Instead, ready meals have become the first choice for many British kids, because their parents are often too busy to cook a proper meal.
The Department for Education hopes that the cookery courses can introduce children to good food and reduce childhood obesity.
“It’s important that children can develop an interest and understanding of good food,” said a spokesman for the department.
“We want to encourage them to develop a love of food and cooking that will stay with them as they grow up.

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can't hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears, so even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.
Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don't allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it's OK just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude  to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it's not for you.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.
【小題1】No one wants to listen to_________ from others’ MP3 player.

A.a(chǎn) loud sound B.sad stories
C.a(chǎn) long movie D.the words of a song
【小題2】 We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music_______.

A.the teacher won’t allow it B.the actors will get angry
C.others won’t hear the play well D.we will miss part of the play
【小題4】 We can take one earphone out when we________.

Missing friends who live far away? Or just need a little family comfort after a long day? Sometimes you just need a hug(擁抱). And sometimes there’s just no one around to give you one. So what do you do? How about a virtual (虛擬的) hug?Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have invented a social media vest (社交背心) that allows people to give hugs to their friends, family and loved ones on Facebook.
The vest is called Like-A-Hug, which is connected(連接) with your Facebook page. Whenever Facebook friends “Like” a photo, video or anything you post on the network, a fan will blow air into the vest to give you a hug. Hugs can also be sent back to the sender by pressing the vest to lose air, according to the website of designer Melissa Chow.
She worked with Andy Payne and Phil Seaton at the MIT Media Lab to build the black vest, making the wearer “feel the warmth, encouragement, support, or love that we feel when we receive hugs.” Melissa Chow said, “We came up with the idea over a free talk about long-distance relationships and the disadvantages of video chat interfaces (視頻聊天界面) like Skype.”
Chow and her workmates actually finished work on the vest last year, but it’s only just recently drawn the attention of the public.
Chow provided no pricing or ordering information for the Like-A-Hug vest, so don’t expect to see people blowing up all over town just yet.
Although researchers believe that Like-A-Hug will cause a worldwide storm, a lot of people think it can’t take the place of the feeling of a real hug. Body temperature or the taste of hair and so on is far from what a social vest can match.
【小題1】What is the main purpose of the text?

A.To show how to design a magic vest.
B.To suggest a newly-built website.
C.To introduce a virtual social media vest.
D.To explain the weak points of Skype.
【小題2】The vest “Like-A-Hug” would probably be most helpful to ________.
A.those who play computer games
B.those who need comfort or support
C.those who design chat interfaces
D.those who like to give others hugs
【小題3】What can we learn about Melissa Chow?
A.She built the vest all by herself.
B.She expects to sell the vest at a high price.
C.She made the vest public last year.
D.She got the idea for a vest while chatting.
【小題4】We can learn from the text that the Like-A-Hug vest ________.
A.can be ordered on Facebook
B.can take the place of a real hug
C.can not only be used by Facebook users
D.produces a hug when you get a Facebook “Like”
