16．Bullying（欺負） in school is a problem for many staff as well as pupils，according to a teachers'union survey．The bullies are often other teachers who pick on their colleagues-with heads and senior staff bully most often．The survey says about a quarter of teachers have been bullied by another member of staff．
The survey of more than 900primary，secondary，and further-education staff across the UK，showed that many teachers faced a range of workplace-bullying threats．
But among the teachers who felt they had been bullied，50% said it was by a senior member of staff，compared with 25% by pupils and 23% by parents．
"I didn't report it as the person bullying was the head teacher，"said a primary school teacher．
"I was driven from a previous job by a head teacher．She lashes out（痛斥） at everybody around her，"said a secondary school teacher．
Another teacher，a head of department in an academy，said："following a poor set of results my whole department have been spoken to again．As a result two are leaving and others would if they could．"
The survey looked at the type of bullying that these teachers had faced from pupils，parents and fellow teachers．The most widespread forms of bullying were"negative comments"and verbal insults（口頭侮辱）．But almost half of bullying victims claimed they had been threatened and two in five reported"mental abuse．"There was physical violence in just under 2% of cases．
The union's general secretary，Mary Bousted，warned that schools needed to have policies in place to protect staff from workplace bullying．
"It is unacceptable for any staff to be bullied by colleagues，and schools and colleges need robust （穩(wěn)健的） policies in place to pick up any problems and deal with them immediately．It is not good enough to just deal with the symptoms（癥狀）； schools and colleges also need to deal with the cause of the bullying，"said Ms．Bousted．

11．San Diego Summer
The summer after my second year in high school，I finally had the opportunity to live with my super-cool sister in San Diego for three weeks．It was going to be great!I would lie on the beach in the sun．Perhaps I would surf a little or ride my bike around Coronado Island．

As I returned home the day before the opening of school，I had complete peace of mind．Although I did not spend every day at the beach as I had initially hoped to do，I did accomplish several things and I felt as if I were a better person because of my three weeks in San Diego．

Rose Cooper from England，and her colleagues gathered 22men and an equal number of women for an experiment．Each person dined alone，continuously receiving nine small shares of food items．These ranged from cheese twists and potato chips to carrots，cherry tomatoes and sandwiches or sausage rolls．
Because the goal was to test the potential impacts of distraction on fullness，the researchers randomly assigned half of the participants to eat in front of a computer-and to gain as many wins as possible at the"card"game．Everyone else was told to focus on the sensory qualities of their meal．
According to their instructions，the participants ate all of the food given to them．Yet people who played a computer game during lunch found their meal less filling than the mindful eaters had．Game players also swallow down twice as many cookies，almost an hour later，when they were allowed all the dessert they wanted （in the name of a taste test）．The British scientists present their findings in the February American Journal of Clinical Nutrition．
The real question is why distracted eating should impact snacking．It appears，the scientists say，that memory plays some tricky role in how we register what we eat and the degree to which it satisfies．
Interestingly，eight years ago，Britta Barkeling of Huddinge University in Stockholm and her colleagues reported somewhat related findings．Their 18overweight subjects had no choice other than to get rid of everything but lunch，on one day-because they were blindfolded．Compared to a day when they could view what they were dining on，these people consumed only three quarters as many calories．Yet even hours afterward，they reported being no less full than on the day they had been able to see their plates．
Of course dining in the dark isn't practical．And sometimes what we eat doesn't really invite our absolute attention．But there is certainly a growing mountain of data indicating that mindless eating is a waste of resources，a risk to our waistlines-and a costly threat to health．
