An Israeli law banning too skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 5'8''tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.

“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto. “Underweight models,” he explained, “can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.”

But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work.” Said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models.

But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an ambitious model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said. “I realized that only legislation can change the situation. There was no time to waste, so many girls were dieting to death.”

However, the efforts to regulate models’ weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in significant changes in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health.

Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. “Certainly I don't believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder,” she says. “It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal.”

2.One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is ________.

A. to change the working conditions of models

B. to lower the chance of skinny models’ death

A. it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit.

B. it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well.

C. it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models.

D. the fashion industry is much too influential.

4.What caused Adatto to think that a law was needed to change the situation?

A. Meeting an ambitious but too skinny model.

B. Establishing his fashion model agent.

C. Being interviewed by a reporter.

D. Seeing a model die from eating disorders.

Alan Izhar-Bodner, an Israeli inventor, has developed a swimming suit for divers to breathe underwater without carrying heavy oxygen tanks. His suit makes use of the air that is dissolved(溶解)in water, just like fish do.
The system uses the Henry Law which states that the amount of gas that can be dissolved in a liquid is proportional (成比例的)to the pressure on the liquid. Raise the pressure ---more gas can be dissolved in the liquid. Decrease the pressure --- less gas dissolved in the liquid releases the gas. This is exactly what happens when you open a can of soda; carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in the liquid and is under pressure in the can. Open the can, releasing the pressure, and the gas fizzes(嘶撕作響)out.
Bodner's System obviously uses a special machine to lower pressure in part of a small amount of seawater taken into the system; dissolved gas is taken out. The patent(專利)reads: A self-contained open-circuit(循環(huán))breathing instrument for use within a body of water naturally containing dissolved air. The instrument is adapted to provide breathable(可吸入的)air. The instrument contains an inlet for taking out a quantity of water from the body of water. It further contains a separator for separating the dissolved air from the quantity of water, thus gaining the breathable air. The instrument further contains an outlet for expelling (驅(qū)逐)the separated water back into the body of water, and another outlet for removing the breathable air and supplying it for breathing.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Software developed by an Israeli company could help concerned parents protect their children from possible dangers online.

The software from United Parents, which can be downloaded for free onto the child’s computer, sends parents a warning by email or text message when doubtful relationships or activities are discovered.

A computer analyzes(分析) children’s interactions on Facebook and within 10 days the service will also be able to follow interactions over MSN Messenger. “Parents probably know about one or two email accounts or nicknames the child uses but often there are other accounts they don’t know about,” co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Hanan Lavy said. “We give the parents the information and they choose what to do with it.” When doubtful interactions are discovered, a warning will direct parents to United Parents’ website where they can get more information and advice about what to do next. Lavy said the service protects children’s privacy more than other products that save chat content and screen captures and require parents to look through masses of information. United Parents does not share with parents private content and dialogues, only the analysis done by a computer.

A Consumer Reports survey released in May found that millions of children use Facebook without supervision, exposing themselves to serious threats from potential dangers online. Lavy, who was head of research and development at Mercury, started United Parents after he saw the risky online behavior of a relative. “I thought the methods available were so unhelpful. I wanted the option of building a community where parents can help other parents,” he said.

Though many of the products available are from small players such as United Parents, large companies such as Intel Corp’s McAfee are entering the market.
