Welcome to my Message Board!
Subject Slimming down classics?
Mr. Handsome 2007-5-12&24 AM | Orion Books, which decides there is a market in creating cut-down classics(經(jīng)典著作),is slimming down some novels by such great writers as L.Tolstoy,M.Mitchell and C.Bronte.Now,each of them has been whittled down to about 400 pages by cutting 30 to 40 per cent of the original, with words, sentences, paragraphs and,in a few cases, chapters removed. The first six shortened editions, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads “in half the time”,will go on sale next month, with plans for 50 to 100 more to follow. The publishing house believes that modern readers will welcome the shorter versions. |
Mr. Edwards 2007-5-12 9:40 AM | Well,I’m publisher of Orion Group. Thanks for your attention,Mr.Handsome. I must say,the idea developed from a game of “shame”in my office. Each of us was required to confess(承認)to the most embarrassing blanks in his or her reading.I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed to get through Gone with the Wind several times. One of my colleagues acknowledged skipping(跳讀)Jane Eyre.We realised that life is too short to read all the books you want to and we never were going to read these ones. As a leading publishing house,we are trying to make classics convenient for readers but it’s not as if we’re withdrawing the original versions. They are still there if you want to read them. |
Ms.Weir 2007-5-12 11:35 AM | I’m director of the online bookclub www.lovereading.co.uk. Mr.Edwards,I think your shortened editions is a breath of fresh air.I’m guilty of never having read Anna Karenina, because it’s just so long.I’d much rather read two 300-page books than one 600-page book.I am looking forward to more shortened classics! |
Mr. Crockatt 2007-5-124:38 PM | I’m from the London independent bookshop Crockatt & Powell. In my opinion, the practice is completely ridiculous. How can you edit the classics?I’m afraid reading some of these books is hard work, and that is why you have to develop as a reader. If people don’t have time to read Anna Karenina, then fine. But don’t read a shortened version and kid yourself it’s the real thing. |
A.opposes the reading of original classics |
B.is embarrassed for cutting down classics |
C.thinks cut-down classics have a bright future |
D.is cautious in its decision to cut down classics |
A.make them easier to read |
B.meet a large demand in the market |
C.increase the sales of literary books |
D.compete with their original versions |
A.speaks highly of the cut-down classics |
B.shows gailty of the original classics |
C.feels guilty of not reading the classics |
D.disapproves of shortening the classics |
A.reading the classic works is a confusing attempt |
B.shortening the classics does harm to the original |
C.publishing the cub-down classics is a difficult job |
D.editing the classic works satisfies children’s needs |

Even at school there had been an unhealthy competition between George and Richard.
“I’ll be the first millionaire in Coleford!” Richard used to boast.
“And you’ll be sorry you knew me,” George would reply “because I’ll be the best lawyer in the town!”
George never did become a lawyer and Richard never made any money. Instead both men opened bookshops on opposite sides of Coleford High Street. It was hard to make money from books, which made the competition between them worse.
Then Richard married a mysterious girl. The couple spent their honeymoon on the coast—but Richard never came back. The police found his wallet on a deserted beach but the body was never found. He must have drowned.
Now with only one bookshop in town, business was better for George. But sometimes he sat in his narrow, old kitchen and gazed out of the dirty window, thinking about his formal rival(競爭對手). Perhaps he missed him?
George was very interested in old dictionaries. He’d recently found a collector in Australia who was selling a rare first edition. When the parcel arrived, the book was in perfect condition and George was delighted. But while he was having lunch, George glanced at the photo in the newspaper that the book had been wrapped in. He was astonished—the smiling face was older than he remembered but unmistakable! Trembling, George started reading.
“Bookends have bought ten bookstores from their rivals Dylans. The company, owned by multi-millionaire Richard Pike, is now the largest bookseller in Australia.”
1.George and Richard were ______ at school.
A. roommates B. good friends C. competitors D. booksellers
2.How did George feel about Richard after his disappearance?
A. He envied Richard’s marriage.
B. He thought of Richard from time to time.
C. He felt lucky with no rival in town.
D. He was guilty of Richard’s death.
3.George got information about Richard from ______.
A. a dictionary collector in Australia
B. the latter’s rivals Dylans
C. a rare first edition of a dictionary
D. the wrapping paper of a book
4.What happened to George and Richard in the end?
A. Both George and Richard became millionaires.
B. Both of them realized their original ambitions.
C. George established a successful business while Richard was missing.
D. Richard became a millionaire while George had no great success.

The e-book is a downloadable book that can be put right onto your e-reader, certain cell-phones and computers. There are websites that sell e-books where you can buy them and load them right onto whatever device you choose. The e-book makes it possible to take reading with you, without the mess of carrying dozens of books around with you.
However, not all book authors are okay with having their books in digital format(格式). The writer of Harry Potter says that her books will never be an e-book, and many just like her feel the same way. However, there are lots of authors who absolutely love the idea and feel it’s the next step to keep books alive.
The e-book can be loaded onto an e-reader which is a mini-device that is slim and compact just like a cell phone. It usually has a touch pad screen and can hold a few hundred books. That ’s perfect news for people who travel on planes or go on holidays and would love to take a collection with them but wouldn’t carry fifty hard covers.
The other great thing about e-readers is that you can read e-books on them quickly and there’s no need for two hands to hold the book and turn the page; it is more convenient for people to read it. Most of them also have a nightlight, so if you want to read at night but don’t want a big light on to wake your partner, the e-reader is ideal. You can also use it on a plane, train or bus when it’s dark.
Websites that sell e-books have their sites looking just like ordinary bookstore websites. There is a list for best sellers and a new release section. There are also e-books on sale and gift certificates available to give to someone who also downloads e-books. They seem to cost the same amount of money as buying a paperback book.
