3.The German city of Hamburg has announced plans to become car-free within the next two decades. It is an ambitious idea, but city officials obviously feel that the personal motorcar does not fulfill a function that walking, biking and taking public transport cannot. The goal of Hamburg's project is to replace roads with a green network, which will allow people to navigate through the city without the use of cars.
Banishingthe car from urban areas is becoming a common trend in many European cities.London imposes a"congestion charge"on private vehicles entering the city centre during rush hours.Copenhagen is building bicycle superhighways radiating out from the city centre. These developments combined may make worrying reading for driving enthusiasts. Is the time of the personal car over?
In the century since the Ford Model T was introduced in 1908,global vehicle numbers have swollen to well over a billion. But according to recent research, the growth may have stopped.
According to Professor Michael Sivak,at the University of Michigan,"motorization"in the US might have reached a peak in 2008,and that the figures have been on the decline since.
"New York,Washington,Boston,Philadelphia, each have more than thirty percent of households without a light duty vehicle,"says Sivak. In fact, the figures show that fifty-six percent of households in New York (which top the list) don't have a car."I think that will be surprising to most people. It was surprising to me,and I am in the business."
Sivak thinks a number of factors could be contributing to the trend, including workingfrom home and the movement of populations back to city centers. In China,Beijing and Shanghai are looking at plans to limit the number of new vehicles being registered to control prouth. It's a movement more cities are looking towards, particularly in the US.

4.The bicycling craze came in when we were just about at the right age to enjoy it.At first even"safety"bicycles were too dangerous and improper for ladies to ride, and they had to have tricycles. My mother had(I believe)the first female tricycle in Cambridge;and l had a little one,and we used to go out for family rides, all together;my father in front on a bicycle. and my poor brather Charles standing miserable on the bar behind lny mother.I found it very hard work.pounding(轟隆隆行進(jìn))away on my hard tyres;a glorious, but not a pleasurable pastinle.
Then, one day at lunch,my father said he had just seen a new kind of tyre, filled up,with air,and he thought it might be a success. And soon after that everyone had bicycles, ladies and all; and bicycling became the smart thing, and the lords and ladies had their pictures in the papers, riding along in the park,in straw hats.
My mother must have fallen off her bicycle ptetty often, for I remember seeing the most appalling cuts and bruises(青腫)on her legs. But she never complained, and always kept these accidents to herself. However, the great Mrs.Phillips, our cook, always knew all about them;as indeed she knew practically everything that ever happened. She used to draw us into the servants'hall to tell us privately:"Her Ladyship had a nasty fall yesterday;she cut both her knees and sprained her wrist. But don't Iet her know I told you."So we never dared say anything.Similar little accidents used to occur when,at the age of nearly Seventy, she insisted on learning to drive a car.She never mastered the art of reversing(倒車),and was in every way an unconventional and terrifying driver. Mrs.Phillips used then to tell us:"Her Ladyship ran into the back of a milk-cart yesterday;but it wasn't much hurt";or"A policeman stopped her Ladyship because she was on the wrong side of the road;but she said she didn't know what the white Line on the road meant,so he explained arld Let her go on."Mrs.Phillips must have had an excellent Intelligence Service at her command, for the stories were always true enough.

2.A new study has discovered that meditation(冥想)and oxygen sport together reduce  depression(抑郁).The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination done twice a week for only two months,reduced the symptoms for a group of students by 40percent
"We are excited by the findings Because we saw such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and non-depressed students,"said lead author Dr.Brandon Alderman."It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression."
Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive effect in  combating depression.Alderman and Dr.Traeey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training (MAP)enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.
Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30minutes of oxygen sport.They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing,enabling those with depression to accept moment-to-moment changes in attention.
Shors,who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus-part of the brain involved in memory and learning-says scientists have shown in animal mode1s that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive.
The idea for the human intervention(干預(yù))came from her laboratory studies, studies, she says, the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover  from stressful life events.
By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can  acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past,Shors says.
"We know these treatments,can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health."said Alderman."The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone time any time and at no cost."

32.What made the research so different?B
A.Adopting a way of meaningful talk.
B.Combining the two ways to treat depression.
C.Treating depression with special medicine.
D.Comparing the depressed with the non-depressed.
33.The underlined word"combating"in Paragraph 3can be replaced byA.
A.fighting         B.identifying
C.distinguishing   D.examining
34.What did the participants do in the research?B
A.They did oxygen sport half an hour before thinking.
B.They through quietly and then took exercise.
C.They took exercise longer than they thought.
D.They took exercise while thinking quietly.
35.What is Shors'main purpose of her studies?C
A.To find our certain brain cells of humans.
B.To study the production of new brain cells.
A.To offer people a new methord to treat stress.
A.To decide the links between stress and exercise.
