There was a man who worked all of his life and saved all of his money. He was a real miser (吝嗇鬼) when it came to his money. I want to take my money to the afterlife."

So he got his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he died, she would put all the money in the casket with him. After all that, he still doubted his money wouldn't go with him. Therefore, he wrote it in his will and a lawyer was asked to see to it.

Jon Peter Lewis, also known as JPL by his enthusiastic fans,

will release his eagerly expected debut (首次) album on

November 7th, 2006. The long awaited record, "Stories From

Hollywood," has been in the works for over a year and features all

original songs.

From the moment Jon stepped out onto the American Idol

stage he was anything but typical. His unconventional (非傳統(tǒng)的)

performance of "A Little Less Conversation" captured the hearts

of millions and he was easily ranked among the top ten finalists.

Following Jon's successful run on Idol, he continued down an unconventional path by turning away offers from producers who wanted to create an image he wasn't comfortable with. Instead, Jon decided to step aside and take the time to develop his own music and unique style.

"Looking back, it would have been a lot easier to jump into one of the offers handed to me, but it would have been a mistake to try and be somebody I wasn’t. My heart just wasn't into being a ballad (民謠) singer or creating a image for teenage girls. I’ve always felt more comfortable with a rock edge to my music and I wanted to develop that sound. It's been a long and challenging road over the last two years, but well worth the wait."

The mix of rock and soulful pop on the album is proving to be the perfect style for Jon's superb vocal (嗓音的) range. Elton John has praised JPL for his exceptional voice, admiring his "great pitch and phrasing."

Jon continues to be a frequent guest of radio and television, most recently taking up a radio tour across the country. Jon, who also plays the guitar, is currently performing with his band and making final plans for a nationwide tour.

60.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

       A.JPL, ranked top 10

B.JPL, a new image for teenage girls

C.JPL, the ballad singer planning a nationwide tour

D.PL, going his own way to success

61.According to the passage we can see "Idol" is _____.

       A.a(chǎn) T.V.station                            B.a(chǎn) talent show

       C.a(chǎn)n album                                             D.a(chǎn) famous singer

62.From the passage we can infer that JPL prefers _____ element in his music.

       A.classical              B.ballad                 C.rock                    D.traditional

63.Which of the following statements about JPL is TRUE?

A.He often gets close to his fans via radio and television.

B.It was hard for him to stand out because few producers offered chances.

C."A Little Less Conversation" is the name of his first album.

D.He began to make his first album at the beginning of 2006.

Hayden,

Congratulations on being 12! Wow, your 11's are over and after this year you will officially be a teenager. Happy Birthday pal! I’m so excited for you.

Last night at the dinner table I told you about how clearly I remember the day before you were born. I sat in front of that fireplace in our very first house in Rowlett, Texas, in 1996 and cried my eyes out before God. I cried because potentially, something could have been wrong with you, but even more than that, I believe I cried out to him because of the gift he was giving me. You are incredibly (難以置信的) special Hayden Davis. You will make your mark on the world in amazing ways. I’ve always known that. I’m glad to be your father, and I’m glad I get to witness how God will use you.

The gifts you receive today will give hints (暗示) of our first big trip that will take place in January. Every quarter there will be a special, secret trip you and I will take up. Many times you won’t know what’s to come; I want you to trust me. Trust that I’m doing what’s right for you and planning events that will be memories for years to come.

Every month I will sit down with you and talk to you about what it takes to be a Christ-follower and leader in this world and how to navigate life in a way that honors the God who loves you so dearly. The men who are the closest to you will speak into your life during these months, teaching you the most valuable lessons they’ve learned in life. They are my closest friends and they will also become your friends and confidants (知己).

I will always believe in you and I’ll always be right by your side cheering you on through each and every stage of your life on this Thanksgiving Day? I couldn’t be more thankful to have you in my life.

Jascha Richter once sang "don’t need too much talking without saying anything" to reveal his lonely feeling in a crowd.

Dad always told me never to ever reveal your true opinions towards other people if such opinions are negative. He said this is the "Chu Shi Zhe Xue", the philosophy of dealing with social network.

It seems that everybody here just follows this philosophy very very well.

Friends. I would say that if I were given true friendship I would definitely treasure it with my greatest care. If I really regard someone as my bosom (親密的) friend, I would never leave her alone whenever she’s in need, either financially or mentally. And I always believe, as long as I treat people with whole-hearted honesty, I would have some rewards -- at least, just one true friend.

Sometimes I just miss my friends in China. Perhaps when we became friends, we were still young, too young to have been contaminated (污染)by any dirt in the society. But here, it is simply different. It seems that all of us have learnt how to survive in a foreign land and such an experience actually makes us learn how to extract (榨取) the most benefits from the surroundings in order to survive.

All are friends around me. I’ve looked through all the dark sides of their personalities and yet I have to pretend that I know nothing. They are good. They are good. And we are friends. And then I can make myself comfortable enough to talk to people I hate the most. And of course, they don’t say any words truly from their hearts. Nor will I.

But sometimes I just feel loath to talk to these people. Sometimes, I just want to be alone, quietly, without being forced to listen to their gossip or other useless words.

       "Standing on a mountain high

Looking at the moon through a clear blue sky

I should go and see some friends

       But they don’t really comprehend"

Jascha Richter expresses my feelings also.

69.The writer mostly expresses her _____ in this passage.

       A.happiness            B.loneliness            C.sadness                D.homesickness

70.The underlined word "loath" in Paragraph 7 has the closest meaning to _____.

       A.unwilling            B.eager                  C.pleased                D.hurt

71.By saying "All are friends around me", the writer means _____.

A.people around her all like her               B.she has a lot of friends

C.there are no real friends                        D.no one is friendly to her

72.Which of the following statements about the writer is TRUE?

A.She mentioned Jascha Richter’s song to show her love for music.

B.She believes in her father’s philosophy of dealing with social network.

C.She shows a positive attitude towards her relationship with others in the passage.

D.She is living abroad but doesn’t enjoy the life there.

第二節(jié)簡答題(共3小題;每小題2分,滿分6分)

閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)第73至第75小題的具體要求,簡要回答問題。

It’s getting tougher these days to think of the glass as half full rather than half empty, but if you’re going to survive this economic crisis, you might as well try.

That’s the lesson from a large study of death rates in optimistic vs. pessimistic (悲觀的) women, conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. Using data from an ongoing government study of more than 100,000 women over age 50 that began in 1994, the team found that 14 years into the study, optimistic women were 14% more likely to be alive than their pessimistic peers (同齡人).

What makes this study different is that women with similar health status and lifestyle were grouped together and compared. "Taking into account health status and lifestyle, we still see optimists with a decreased risk of death compared to pessimists," says Dr. Hilary Tindle, lead author of the study. "I was surprised that the relationship was independent of ail of these factors."

So if the women’s lifestyle doesn’t explain their longevity (長壽),what does? While the study was not designed to find out specific factors, Tindle has several potential explanations* which she hopes to be proved in further trials: optimistic people have more friends and a larger social network on which they can rely during crises; they also tend to deal better on their own with stress, a risk factor that has been related to high blood pressure, heart disease and early death in previous studies.

It’s also worth noting that the current report identifies only a relationship between optimism and longevity? it does not actually confirm whether optimism can directly cause a longer life. Additional research will have to be done in order to answer that question. But if a sunnier disposition (性格)helps promote healthy behaviors like eating well and exercising regularly, then there’s no reason not to view the glass as half full.

73.Find in the passage what the underlined part "the relationship" in Paragraph 3 refers to.(回答詞數(shù)不超過8個(gè))

You might have heard a lot about the Chinese Olympic team competing in the Beijing Olympics, but how much do you know about the British team?

Team GB (Great Britain), as they are also known, have been training in Macau. The team are using the sports facilities that were used for the East Asian Games in Macau in 2005. Special gym equipment has also been shipped in for them and the sportsmen and women are spending a week or so there before they head up to Beijing.

The idea behind the camp is to give the British team time to overcome the time difference between China and the UK. The team also need to adjust to the hot temperatures and the humidity (濕度).A tropical storm this week has however affected training.

UK Sport is an organization responsible for managing the development in sport in the UK and they have set targets for the British team’s achievements in Beijing. They want the team to achieve a minimum of 35 medals in total. Sports experts are predicting the British team will exceed (超越) this target but only time will tell.

The British team has plenty of strong competitors for medals. Ben Ainslie is a sailor and he is aiming for his third gold medal in Beijing. He has been described as Britain’s top hope for a medal.

Katherine Grainger is a female rower and she will lead the women’s rowing team. The team have scored other medals including an Olympic silver but they are aiming for a first British women’s rowing team Olympic gold.

Everyone is talking about diver Tom Daley. He is only 14 years old and it’s a great achievement to make it into the Olympic team at such a young age.

We wish both the Chinese and the British teams great Olympic success over the next couple of weeks.

One possible version:

Though going to college is becoming the current of the day, I have my own pursuit in college. I love literature. Therefore, I want to learn more about literature in college so that I can write my own literary works.

In my opinion, my ideal college should have a big library where I can pursue my dream of literature. What’s more, I really wish to be taught by some outstanding teachers. When I become a college student, besides doing a good job in my studies, I hope to do some part-time jobs, so I can have a better understanding of the society and myself.

If I weren’t admitted to college I would feel a little sad. But I won’t give up my dream. I’ll find a job and try to realize my dream.

M: Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Prof. John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time these courses are offered this room which is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. There are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ 11 understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way. Knowing the rules will help you master a large number of words. This is probably the No. 1 reason why this class is so popular.
